Brontë Parsonage Museum
The entrance to the station building at Haworth Railway Station
A preserved Leyland Atlantean double-decker bus with Alexander (Walter Alexander Coachbuilders) bodywork, registration BFS 14L (previously registered as GJZ 9571). The bus has been converted to open-top configuration for heritage tourist operations.
The bus operates on the "Brontë Tour" service (route 27), a heritage sightseeing operation serving locations connected to the renowned Brontë sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne, who lived in Haworth. The destination blind displays Charlotte (named for Charlotte Brontë, author of Jane Eyre), while the elegant gothic-style "Brontë" script adorns the lower bodyside panel. The cream and green livery complements the vehicle's heritage character.
The Leyland Atlantean, manufactured between 1958 and 1968, pioneered rear-engined, front-entrance double-decker bus design in the United Kingdom, enabling one-person operation by eliminating the need for a conductor.
Walter Alexander Coachbuilders, based in Falkirk, Scotland, was formed in 1947 to continue coachbuilding activities when W. Alexander & Sons' bus operations were nationalised. By 1983, Alexander was the largest supplier of double-deck bus bodies in the world.
The photograph captures the bus on Station Road, directly outside Haworth Station on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, a 5-mile heritage railway in West Yorkshire that runs from Keighley to Oxenhope. The railway reopened in 1968 after closure by British Railways in 1962, and is perhaps most famous for its role in the 1970 film The Railway Children. Since preservation, the railway has made Haworth its administration, locomotive, and engineering centre.

Behind the bus, characteristic honey-colored Yorkshire stone buildings and walls are visible, along with the station's footbridge crossing overhead. The Brontë sisters—Charlotte, Emily, and Anne—lived in Haworth and wrote some of the most celebrated novels in English literature, including Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Today, Haworth attracts visitors from around the world who come to experience the literary landscape that inspired these iconic works.
