![De remota fundação, a Igreja Matriz da bonita povoação de Estômbar, que integra o concelho da Lagoa, foi remodelada no reinado de D. Manuel I. No entanto, o século XVIII havia de a reformar quase totalmente, conservando este templo ainda alguns sinais de épocas anteriores. A Matriz de Estômbar é dedicada ao apóstolo S. Tiago e foi decretada em 1984 Monumento Nacional. Situada no Largo da Igreja desta povoação algarvia, a Matriz de S. Tiago de Estômbar ergue-se no topo de um morro, ao qual se acede por escadório de vários patamares.
Antecedida por um adro, a imponente frontaria revela a reforma da segunda metade do século XVIII. Na fachada rasga-se um belo portal quinhentista da época manuelina, em arco de volta perfeita, enquadrado por estrutura de pedra idêntica (grés escuro local); as suas colunas apresentam decoração naturalista e curiosos e invulgares motivos antropomórficos - músicos com os seus instrumentos e figuras femininas, talhados com alguma rudeza, mas imbuídos de uma rica sensibilidade popular.
A estrutura do portal é encimada por movimentadas aletas, sobre as quais se rasga uma janela retangular, ladeada por motivos barrocos curvilíneos. A porta é flanqueada por duas janelas retangulares gradeadas. A empena desenha linhas ondeadas, encimada por frontão curvo, pináculos e cruz latina, no tímpano do qual se inscreve um medalhão barroco ornamentado. A fachada é flanqueada por duas torres sineiras quadrangulares, marcadas por cunhais salientes e divididas em dois pisos. O superior é rasgado por ventanas, que apresentam cobertura curva marcada por várias urnas sobre pedestais.O interior é formado por três naves, repartidas em quatro tramos por arcos de volta perfeita, forrados por painéis de azulejos setecentistas. As paredes laterais das naves apresentam idêntico revestimento cerâmico.
Sobre o arco triunfal e circundando um óculo, expõe-se um painel cerâmico alusivo à Ascenção. A capela-mor é totalmente forrada com azulejos setecentistas (1719), figurando episódios hagiográficos e graciosos anjos brincando.
