The city was the site of a major siege during the ongoing Sudanese civil war, which lasted 18 months, before falling to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in October 2025. Shortly after the city's capture by the RSF, an estimated 60,000–68,000 civilians were killed in the El Fasher massacre. By January 2026, it was described as a ghost town.
