The formal open-ing of the railway from Matadi, at themouth of the Congo, to Stanley Pool, adistance of 250 miles, is an event of nolittle interest to missions. It connects byquick and easy transit the interior of Africawith the ocean. It opens to commerce theCongo valley, the greatest river basin ofthe world, with its 3000 miles of naviga-ble waterway and its 30,000,000 of popu-lation. I—Y Text Appearing After Image: PUr: L Miscellaneous Potteries 187 represented by dishes, rice bowls, wine cups, saucers and spoons,preserve jars, wine bottles, etc., in common porcelain, besidestiles of various kinds, which implies the manufacture of potteryas well. These wares, we are informed in the catalogue, are largelyexported to Saigon, Siam, Manilla, etc. ; a statement confirmedby the Chinese Commercial Guide,^ which adds India, the Archi-pelago, and the southern provinces. This is interesting in viewof the quantities of coarse china, blue and white ^ and coloured,which is brought from these parts by collectors who take its crudeappearance as evidence of age. The factories are located at Pa-kwoh,a village near Shih-ma, which lies between Amoy and Chang-chouFu. Tung-an Hsien in the same neighbourhood is also named asa pottery centre. There are several important factories within easy reach ofShanghai.
