Kovalam (கோவளம்), historically known as Covelong, is a coastal fishing village in Thiruporur taluk, Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu, India. It lies on the Coromandel Coast along the East Coast Road (ECR), about 40 kilometres (25 mi) south of central Chennai and north of Mamallapuram.

settlement during the early eighteenth century. In 1719, Godefroy de la Merveille obtained permission from Sa'adatullah Khan I, Nawab of the Carnatic, to establish a trading post at the site, then known to Europeans as Cabelon. The settlement subsequently became associated with the Ostend Company, which established one of its early Asian trading posts at Covelong. Today, the village is particularly associated with its beach, fishing community and surfing.
