The origin of the municipality dates back to the late 19th century, when the Italian Vicente Anastácio acquired the Fazenda Santa Maria, on the banks of the Aquidauana River, giving rise to the first urban settlement on the left bank. With the arrival of the Noroeste do Brasil Railway, the axis of development shifted to the right bank, where Aquidauana grew; the left bank became a district of Aquidauana in 1958 and achieved emancipation through state law no. 2,143 of March 18, 1964, with installation on January 1, 1965.
The economy of the municipality is based on agriculture and livestock farming, with the production of soy and maize and a cattle herd of about 252,000 head in 2023, in addition to commerce and services. In 2023, the gross domestic product (GDP) was R$783.8 million, the 24th largest in the state.
