Addingham is a village and civil parish in the City of Bradford district of West Yorkshire, England, situated in the valley of the River Wharfe in Lower Wharfedale. It lies near the A65, 6 miles (10 km) south-east of Skipton, 3 miles (5 km) west of Ilkley and 12 miles (19 km) north-west of Bradford, and is within 1Read more
mile (2 km) of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the parish recorded a population of 3,730 at the 2011 census, rising to 3,785 at the 2021 census.
The village's name is recorded as Haddincham c. 972 and in variant forms in the Domesday Book of 1086, and is thought to derive from Old English, meaning "homestead associated with a man called Adda". The surrounding area shows evidence of activity from the Mesolithic period onward, including Bronze Age cup-and-ring-marked stones on Addingham Moor and the remains of an Iron Age settlement, known as Round Dikes, on Addingham Low Moor. St Peter's Church, a Grade I listed building incorporating reused Norman stonework, is thought to occupy the site of an early Christian centre recorded in the ninth century.
Addingham developed as a farming settlement, with its oldest surviving houses dating from the 17th century, before the textile industry transformed it from the late 18th century onward; Low Mill, opened in 1787, was Yorkshire's first worsted-spinning mill, and by the late 19th century five mills operated in the village. The industry declined during the 20th century and had ended by 1976, after which the village became primarily a commuter and retirement settlement. Much of its historic core lies within the Addingham Conservation Area, designated on 17 January 1977, and the parish contains a substantial number of listed buildings, including three at Grade I or Grade II*.
